As biologist I can say that any animal, any kind of life always had o fight for place, food, to win. It´s to kill or die. The “self Gene” as well said by Dawkins, is there to survive and fight to keep on track.
As a human-being, I can say that world would be better if we were more able to share than to compete. You teach me about music, I teach you about biology. You will know more about biology and I will know more about music. We both will be one step further. Then, if you talk with a therapist you will know about music, biology and therapy in whatever form you want to.
But nowadays we need to fight and struggle to get money, to get power, there´s no more space to talk without a feeling that one said something better than the other.
I can say that I was always sharing the knowledge I had and now I see myself unemployed and some of them who was in a hidden competition agains me won and they have their money, freedom and now I struggle with myself against low confidence and low self-esteem to try to be back on track.
It´s a kind of Utopia to share. You, unfortunatelly it hurts you, are not a “normal” person for the society. Everybody wants something from you, so they will always pay attention in what you say. This is why you connect with people. More than because you want to, is because you are who you are. And not to suffer I chose a philosophical way that connects me to a master and a Love (I talk about Sufism) and it calms me down when I want to be connected and do not see anyone around because they are so busy fighting. Hope I am connected spiritually with you and that this connection will really help us to improve each other. Nice writing again. I will think much more about it.

    Hello Alanis,
    Thanks for these words Alanis.
What you describe here hits the core of what life is about, i think. It is what people mean when they say: what i want most is worldpeace.
Maybe this is why we are on this planet; to gain this feeling; that we are perfect the way we are; authentic, with different likes and dislikes. Find the innerpeace to be exactly who we are, without cultural boundaries, opinions from the outside-world,etc, and there-for finding our passions and sticking with them. Whether those passions contain gardening, loving your cat, being a doctor, someone who likes tv, and so on. No judgement, just being. I think that this would stop all fighting, and start all creating. The enjoyment of seeing a ladybug would fill peoples hearts again, the little things in life that are so important will be seen. As if it was the most normal thing in the world to see the perfect beauty and wonders in the world.xx

I don’t know if she would claim so herself, but the very first paragraph of the article makes it clear that from cutting edge psychotherapists Daniel and Ronald Siegel’s PoV, AM would be an eighth-level mindfulness meditator in the tradition of people like Jiddu Krishnamurti, S. N. Goenka, Thich Naht Hahn, and Tera Brach. That’s the level at which people can directly experience the “reality” of others. It takes a while to get to this, but when people do, they’re ethics seem to be very reliably in place at all times. AM has been meditating in more or less this style for 20+ years that I know of, so I expect she’s speaking from her own experience of the sort of “automatic capacity” to be able to do this. It’s quite the little life changer.

She mentions vipassana meditation in the article. There’s a place not far from me where, after an orientation of Dr. Goenka’s method, one can do ten days in complete silence. The four articles in the series at iVillage all seem to come from the sort of mental clarity and edification one obtains from vipassana and other Buddhist practices.

As I just finished reading this post, i was thinking about it and a small child was walking down the street below the window saying”Love love love love love love love” with each step, fading into the distance. I think that’s what the article is about, responding with love to situations rather than power.
