if you were not working at the job you are currently doing, what would you be doing and why?
Tags: question fans job career
Well I recently changed my life in a drastic way. I was working in a job that I disliked a lot because I wanted to go and DO that thing I always wanted to do.
So I left my job, sold my ‘life’ (belongings), saved up. Now, I’m on a path not to just dream what I want to do, but make it a reality.
I’m on my way to be a Fashion Editor for Vogue Paris by the time I’m 35.
I think it’s great that you quit a job you really disliked and set yourself on the road to fulfil your dream. I find that very courageous, and I hope that you find what you are seeking and I wish you lots of success.
I like to be a journalist, but sometime I think I could be a writer or teacher.
Thank you for asking this Well, I guess I’m already doing what I would want to be doing if I wasn’t at my current job. Mainly because I don’t have a current job :p I’m just managing to live the way I want to right now and it happens to be very simple. If I think about where I’d like to be in the future I picture myself living in a cabin not too far away from the city where I am, raising a few dogs and passing the time with my music and whatever else happens. I don’t really see that vision as something I must have or anything though. I don’t really know what I want because I don’t really want anything. As long as I can keep playing guitar, I am ok with staying on this boat in the sea that is life. I’m curious to see its path, but I am still even after a few years, plagued with a few cobwebs of the egoic desires which I don’t really want anything to do with, but are still dangled in front of me like a carrot along with a feeling like I should be reaching for it although I see its meaninglessness.
I would be publishing my poetry. And I hope to do it very soon.
I would like to work with music, as a music producer, I think fantastic the processe to produce the music.
I’d be spending all my time working on music and singing every single day. I’d probably devote my time to several different bands and musical projects!
I like to do something to help the planet somehow, something with a purpose.
Another thing I want to do is drop everything and go around the world just enjoying every day, enjoying the scenery, meeting people, different cultures, working for food – just to survive.
I am biologist and I was working with scorpion venom. I published some articles and I am proud of this. But I am not working at the moment as biologist due to the recession in Europe where I am living since 2009. But I would love to work in a music studio, even cleaning the place, playing with different instruments. Tim Thorney is the guy who made me think more about it. also, I would like to work with Marketing. I am so creative person and would love to develop ideas to create ads. That´s it. Or, any job at the moment would be perfect
I think I would like to be a movie editor or music video editor. Not to see my name in the credits but to take part in the development process and with luck bring others enjoyment through images when words sometimes fail.
I’ve always wanted to be a meteorologist! The weather as always facinated me!
I would be reading, or listening to music, or watching movies. I’ve never thought why I do this things… I read because I always want to learn about something, there’s always a lot of books I want to read. I watch movies just to have fun, and It’s better when there’s nice people around me. I listen to music to have fun, to feel, to enjoy. I like songs that catch my feelings and take me out of the automatically way of living, I like movies that does it, too. I used to grow some plants, but now I dont have enough space and time for them. See them grow, take care, breath their air… it’s magic!
Interesting question Alanis.
I would love to work again with animals and children. My previous job, which i worked at for 10yrs, involved riding for disabled and animal therapy. A combination of horse riding and hands on interaction with the animals in my care. It was such a pleasure to see the positive effect animals have on disabled children and adults. How they would feel 10 feet tall while on a horse,or there reaction to the movement of the horse.
People say never work with animals or children, but i disagree, it was the most rewarding job i ever had and hopefully i will get the chance to do something similar or same in the near future. It’s and outdoor job for me..
Oh this is an easy one and I wish I had the courage to do it (life sort of gets in the way.) In a past life I used to be a photographer which was incredibly satisfying. Taking portraits is always a fascinating experience: playing with light/shadows, using colour or black&white, composition… There are just so many different ways to enjoy what the medium offers it’s endless. I’ll never forget one particular shot I took a long time ago; they were a high school couple backlit by the sun. The best part was when I had the film developed (yeah, it was a while ago there was a magnificent halo over their head which I didn’t see in the shot. Just perfect.
I love this question. I would love to write and record music. I have always been a dancer but to combine rock with dance and perform it would be the ultimate. Not for fame and materialistic reasons, just because it’s something that needs to be done. My biggest un-reveled-in yearn. Dreaming is healthy
Now I`m work with children in a Hospital here in Brazil, I`m graduating in a medical school.,.,but if I could choose another activity I would choose Be a Sommelier, travel the world meeting people and places. Getting knowlege about grapes and cultures trhougt the History….kkk,..,luv it.
I am a system engineer and I am working on software development, but since I was 13 i play the guitar and acctually i am taking singing lessons and drums lessons. When I feel ready, I’m gonna work really hard in my music, cause it’s not a hobby, it’s really what i want to do.
Have to put the same question to you too, What would you be doing had you not chosen this path??
being from south africa i would love to address adult illiteracy by forming READ institutions in rural communities. I’d make it my mission to use online tools to have the people whom i empowered with the ability to read to then have each person write a short story and in turn have each story published online. i’d call it ALPHABET VOICES and strive to educate 100 000 people who are 18 and older and who are incapable of interpreting the alphabet and thus unable to create words that might tell their own stories. I have no real desire to pursue money or material things. I’d live right there with them and savor the beauty of humanity in all of its splendor. That would make me very very happy. And i’d continue to do this until i was old. Because there simply is no greater tragedy than a person who is unable to read. Because if you can read chances are you could write. And everyone deserves an opportunity to tell their own story.
I would like to be a museum curator. There is so much beautiful art in the world. I would love to be able to showcase rising artists and introduce brilliant works to those who would otherwise not have opened their minds to the feeling a work of art can evoke.
I’m a typical virgo girl. I can do a thousand things all together and still not do any of them very well.
Today I’m video editor and my life has always been about art and images. So I’m not that far away from what I wanted to do.
But this year I decided to go after what always made me feel alive and connected with myself and that things are drawing and design.
So, next month I’m gonna start taking drawing classes again to reconnect with everything that always fascinated me.
Along with that (virgo, right?) I’m about to record a CD with my duo. Another thing I want to do since I was 14. I’m almost 30 now and things are finally getting together!
I work with something I like and do well, I’m about to reconnect to art which I love and my music is coming alive.
In a short line: I can’t imagine me doing anything else. 2012 is very much a year of changes.
Good Day Alanis,
Why would I not be working at the job that I’m currently working at? If it were because I’d have financial security and could choose how I spend my time, then I’d enroll at the local University that is five minutes from my home if that University has an excellent Philosophy program. Then I would work as much as possible on Philosophy and earn a degree if I could achieve it. Then after earning a degree, I’d go for a masters degree and a doctorate (PhD) in Philosophy. During my time as a student, I would also work on writing a Philosophical work (book…I already have many ideas and a title). If I were adept enough to achieve those goals, I’d try to be a pundit on tv and be a panelist discussing many subjects. During all of the time as a student, I would get involved at the University in terms of discussing Philosophy, and would even try to do workshops at bookstores and other places.
Thank You Alanis for asking us the aforementioned questions!
Good Day Again Alanis,
….I forgot to explain “why” I would have the goals that I mentioned…….
I would have those goals because I believe that Philosophy is probably the most efficient way of improving humanity. I would like to contribute to the betterment of humanity even if I could only do it in a very small, insignificant way……
Thank You Again Alanis! It’s very Good to see how involved you are with your new website. It’s Excellent!
I would be working at some type of Care Center helping people. The disabled and the elderly need positive people around them that care about them.
I really don’t know. Nowadays I’m doing something that I always hated: work in a Bank. I’m back to the college to study something that I love: literature, but everybody says that I can’t be teacher (and I would like to be). Something that I really love is write short stories, novels a articles , i wrote some books and articles but nobody read them and I starting to believe that I can’t be a famous writer or a teacher or a lawyer or anything.
I think it is great that you are back at college doing what you love to do. Who is to judge what you can’t be. In other words, if you want to be a teacher, go for it. I was a English teacher myself, and I stumbled upon the job by a little bit of luck. I believe one shouldn’t listen to people telling one what one can’t be. No one is to judge one’s dreams of what one wants to do and be.
I wish you the best of luck.
I love what i do, making custom furniture.Love using combination of hands and creativity to bring things into this world. As a kid longed to be an explorer, but there are few if any places left on earth that need exploring. Always thought being an archaeologist would be a great life. Love to dance, not sure how easy it would be to make a living out of it. I’ve long known that at some point in my life i would be called upon to make an abrupt career change involving something I hold near and dear, being in a position to help others spiritually. I would hardly call it work as it’s something I’d love to do, feel that it would call on all the things that i’ve learned over many years and through many challenging times. The thought of being in a position to help others connect with their spiritual side and to be able to see them use life as the learning forum it’s intended to be would be highly exciting and rewarding . Anyway, we’ll see how that goes. In the meantime just happy we had a big snowfall so the outdoor skiing can begin!
i work in music & there is nothing else i want to do. if i wasn’t doing this i’d probably be in and out of hospital to be honest… or not alive at all.
WifeHusbandYoga!!!? With fertile & virile potency: WifeHusbandYoga! is my why, but I shold let it mire well known I have ascended out of my body in climax with one of my wives that wanted to been in first place and asked that I only choose other brides based on appearance of attractivity
Writing. Hands down. I’d be freelance writing for magazines and enjoying being at home with my bambinos. Dare to dream…
My dream job would be to be a full time Poet, as there is nothing more than I enjoy but to be lost within the “creation” process.
but realistically, I dream of one day being able to go back to school and work with troubled teens, as I know that life all too well.
The coolest thing ever would be to live in a cabin on a mountain top. In the summer I would grow my own food and be completely self-sufficient. In the winter, I would write novels by the fireplace.
More realistically, I’d like to be an editor for a publishing company. I like correcting grammar because I’m a nerd. Currently, I’m a web designer and marketer. That’s not so bad either.
i am should fly a light aircraf
I was able to get a job driving a public bus in Las Vegas 13 years ago. One time I tought I saw Alanis with her mom and sister in a small town North of Las Vegas in a casino, but I turned around and went back to the Blacjack table. I’ve always been a driver of anything and I’ve lived in and been in all of the Western U.S. States except for Montana, Alaska and Hawaii. I like to drive, my mom use to race cars and one time came in 2nd place 3 months before I was born in 1959 up in Salt Lake City, where I was when Alanis recorded ‘Jagged Edge Pill.’ I like to appease audiences also.
MUSIC-”What would I be doing?” Eariler today I watched some of the videos of Amy Winehouse. Today was the first time I ever saw any videos of Amy except for ‘Rehab.’ Then I went thru most of Duffy’s video’s and
it asked to leave a comment for “Loving You” which has real good guitar and a real good song but maybe could be slowed down in 3 different sections of the song, but I got busy. So it dawned on me, thinking…Duffy-”Okay, just who are you going to get for expert feed back?” Steve(me)- “Well, Alanis Morisset, for one. Can I call her? or should I go ask in person so we can keep it to ourselves to not get others involved in this recording?” And so I had 2 other people I could ask earlier today i was thinking about, but that was a couple of hours ago and I would have to go thru it all again to remember. So as you can see when I’m a proven Day Trader trading stocks on the internet for which I’ve been learning how to do for the last 6 years, I might not be working as a Public Bus driver and I’m going to find a music artist somewhere and help who ever it is make songs. And I always like to get 3 albums or so just in case there are any contract signings. Have a Good Day! Hey, Where’s all the Alanis Morissete videos?
Just saw someone playing a Bass guitar on a Craigs list for song making and it looks like making a song or some could take a while.
Like my sister said back in the 1970′s: ‘E Plurbus Ummmmmm, UOU, okay. Or in the 80′s at a party (talking about something that nobody know whats being said; “Sometime this decade?”
Ah hah! I know, I was kicking back, laughing, no tv and I was just about to get up and progress forward and… “I’ll find a singer for American Idle.” That seems to be the day today. I think that’s what my sister also said back in the 70′s, “Why don’t I find a singer instead of an electric guitarist or something.” Somebody that can go to rehersal or try outs that can get to at least most of the notes that can also get to the notes to win the Idle contest.
I absolutely love my job (private piano, speech, drama and art teacher to children) but I would also like to work with food… something that allows me to cook healthy food for the soul all day long, without having to answer to the man. Something self started and self maintained.. watch this space!
Playing and singing! Because music is love!
Well, I work a day job as a security guard. But my passion is directing/producing music videos. My dream is to do that for a living. I love doing it because there is so much creativity involved. I started back in 2003; doing a video for some guys I knew from HS. I’m 30 now and continue doing music videos on occasion. I’m from Cincinnati so I guess moving to a city with a bigger music scene could help. Last summer I shot a video for a video for a young lady from my area. I loved doing that video and it turned out to be my best video yet. You can see it here. Thanks dm http://tinyurl.com/KelseyMira
when i was i kid i was sure i should become a singer than growing up i found out i was off-key!
so i would like to be a singer, a designer and also an illustrator..
thanks for asking
Well I’m a full time musician in a 6 & 12 string acoustic duo called the vinnys (www.myspace.com/the vinnys ) with my son. You have been a big influence over the years especially to him ( his 1st live show was the junkie tour ) anyways I would work in a hospital as a patient advocate. Weird but I think it would be interesting…Thanks AM
Dream job would be to start a Ticket Concert Corp that didn’t rip kids/fans off of ticket prices. Bands are working for stub hub/ebay ect these days & all these corrupt ticket agencies over the US/ Canada selling tickets for hundreds of $$ then you have to pay $30.00 to park your car ! You’re in over $200+ & you didn’t even get in the door yet !?

I have always liked your music and recently been listening to you a lot and it has helped with all thats on my table now. Thank you Alanis, you are a gifted lady and I dig your music past to present (((hug)))
This 2nd one was an error will not let me delete ? Ty
Man… I would like to work as Indiana Jones, hunting lost things !! hahahah….
Now seriously, I would like to work writing something. Books, songs, articles, magazine reports… anything ! I really like it.
P.S.: ALANIS, JOIN US IN THE “SPIRITUALITY AND PSICOLOGY” GROUP !!! We will take it easy with you at the beginning… hahahah !

Do not worry about the language. The most important in this case is the intention.:-) Thanks for doing this for us
Create art and paint paint paint paint paint!!!
Well, if I had the enough moey I probably go around the world. Knowing new places, hunting adventures, leraning new lenguages( or just swearing, is the first I learn of a new lenguage), eat the most extrange food, knowing new cultures an people.
But not have enough money… So let’s keep working.
And I support @eguidem “Join Us, The Group Is Wainting For You… Answer The Call, Your Fans Are Waiting”
Oswaldo, thanks for supporting eguidem and our group. It´s amazing what we are doing. will be much better and worthy when she joins us.
Yeah Débora !! And she will… right, Alanis ? \o/
I work with in financial area and web designer but I’d like to be doctor
I’d like to be a published author, and there are a few more dreams (work-in-progress), too. I believe that no matter what I’m involved in professionally, it is going to be related to writing, storytelling and making a positive impact – healing, improving people’s lives through stories/art/coaching/philosphy/applied creativity.
well I’m still a student and I really like being a student If I would have already finished now I would be spending some months in India doing social work with children, something with sport and teaching maths and helping them with english.
RAFAAAA !! HEEEY… GOOD TO SEE YOU HERE !
I would like to be a good biologist as I could always be if i had had the opportunity to. Spread the consciouness about environment
I’d be a florist. Flowers make people happy in the best and worst of times. Also because I also love flowers, and making people happy.
I really like being surrounded by nature and animals. So i would like to have a cabin in the woods, near a lake, and have all the time for my art, painting and drawing. Being totally self sufficient.
That’s a tough question. I guess ideally, I would like to double major, getting a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Psychology(not discounting it yet the timing isn’t there) and be a psychotherapist like Frued…or being a Financial Specialist since I’ve helped people with money….or 6 months being professional skydiver and the remaining 6 months a professional volleyball player(Always wanted to play in the AVP circuit) since I was in 4th grade…Can I say I want to do it all?
Well, right now I’m only a student in grammar school, ans we have to decide which university to attend in a couple of days. Your question really got me thinking whether I’ll be regretting my choice… I would like to become a doctor, because I’m really interested in biology in general. But if I go to the medical university, all I’ll hear about is the human anatomy, and sooner or later I will forget all about the other beauties in biology, like the study of animals, plants, ecology, genetics, etc. But I really can’t imagine that how could I make a living out of any of these other territories. And eventually, I will have to chose one… So I guess the medical university it is. I just hope I will have enough commitment to finish it even with these doubts I have right now.
I think I will wait with the decision until we go to an autopsy with our school, and if I can ‘handle’ it quite well, then maybe I won’t have such a hard time at med school.
Well, this question really got me thinking…
I’d love to be a Writer. I just have to develop the patience to write a book!
Creating art. It gives me a buzz Making videos, writing poetry, plays, and songs,ya know fun stuff.
I probably would be writing stories. Everytime I discovered myself suddenly having a huge ammount of freedom and time then my mind would jump in joy and start composing words as if there were no boundaries to my imagination. Also I probably would be a singer in a rock band because no one can stop me singing what I love. Last but not least, I would dedicate most time to being an activist. Reading and writing on all the things I see are wrong in the world. Being a socialist by heart I want to change it to what I know it should be.
playing the cello and painting while some how getting paid for it!
I work in an office and I’d love to do a job which is more outdoor based. I cant really leave this job because the money is good and I need to provide for my family. Something like an Ambulance driver even a traffic Warden. I love walking in the countryside so Park Ranger or gude would be good.
I would fly over to you and motivate you to write new songs. that would help the world and although located in the heart.
Currently I’m not working, so I took the time to find myself artistically, so during this long free time I paint, sketch, photograph (even with the snow outside), filming the neighbor’s cats playing outside and sing a lot when nobody’s near ^^! Doing these things while I’m seeking for another job makes me feel alive, away from any kind of depression and keep my mind busy and functional !
I have been thinking lately that If my life got rough I wouldnt mind dropping everything and going to maui. I would live on a beach in a small tent and eat alot of fruit. Snorkel every day. Lay on the sand and watch the clouds go by. Enjoy the beauty of the planet.
I am trying to pursue a childhood dream, have
no support-nothing new.Asked someone for
help,no response.Lyrics sitting in 5 note
books,collecting dust bunnies.Looking forward
to Your new tour,perhaps inspiration/ideas
will follow.Certainly a change of scenery
and climate are encouraging…
Professional photographer. I actually take pics now, but I don’t consider myself a pro. No particular schools done, just learnt it by myself. Why? Because I love to capture the moment, the souls, the joy and the anger and capture it in a picture.
It is actually what I’m doing now. I was trained as a psychiatrist but I’m currently studying clinical linguistics. Do I like it? I don’t know. Would I like to go back to psychiatry? Perhaps. But what I enjoy most of all is writing. However, I’m afraid to quit everything and devote myself to writing.
hey alanis i am so excited you are coming to the uk and i have tickets!!!!! in answer to your question i am at present a nurse in neonatal intensive care which i love immensely but i would loved to have been a fashion photographer…….because since taking up photography in my spare time i have realised my creative side xx
I am a publicist by the moment. But I think that if I weren’t in this job, I’d be watching DVDs at home, like Six Feet Under, or Dexter or any other. Damn, I love that as well as reading and listening to great music (great means Alanis and working out, my favorite pleasure. Otherwise, my dream is to have a band and be the main composer….
Could I be?
your question seems to correctly imply that if one had the choice, one would do something else than what one is doing. Many of us work to survive, in other words, we work to pay the bills and not for self-fulfillment. It seems interesting to me that it is often the case that one has the time, but not the money or the money, but not the time, to do what one truly wants to do. I finished studying a few months ago and I am now job hunting. If I had a choice I would travel the world to interact with people from other culture.
PS. My husband and I got tickets for your concert in Austria. I am turning 36 in June and I started to play the guitar again 3 years ago after taking a break 20 years ago. Your music inspires me because it is heart-felt and honest. Is there any chance that you would be willing to sign my guitar? It would really mean a lot to me.
nice Q, A. your question begs many answers.
first off, the literal. if I lost my job and needed money, what would I do? obvious answer that applies to [almost] anyone: search for another job. if i had a lifestyle to support, i’d get education and invest in getting a job that fits with my lifestyle.
second off, the wish. what is your ~doing~, if there weren’t so many walls in the way to prevent you from ~doing~. what does your inner child *SCREAM*? what makes you cry for no reason? what makes you think less of yourself when you look in the mirror? what wakes you up at night? what motivates you to keep breathing?
my ~doing~ is perceived as using knowledge to help. i’m still searching for the tag to my ~doing~. my wish is that my ~doing~ leads to helping others express their thoughts. the people who aren’t searching for help, because those are the people i want to give it to. those are the people who could use the help i can offer. i want to help the people trapped in their own little prisons, and i want it to be at no expense of their own.
I have already answered this question, but here I am again. I study physics, I love beeing a student, but a job I would like to do is organizing small events. I love cooking and thinking about menus, and I love gathering people and have a good feeling how welcoming people
I would be a guitarist and busniness man with Music background as my Business cuz I always successfull in that type of business…What do U think?
I’d find I nice quit place in nature and play my guitar.
I’d have a lake with no fish in it and go fishing every day in a nice shady spot.
I’d maybe try to have a family of my own with some girl I could love.
I’d try to make things better for my community, for people, and the environment.
This is starting to sound like a politicians answer. Hmm. I guess I’d have to do something. Maybe volunteer at the hospital or just try to find a place when I don’t have to constantly strive but rather thrive and be a positive influence maybe like Dr. Kopper or my neighbor Vince. And I’d definitely grow all my own organic food without high fructose corn syrup in it (IE: non-processed).
I would help people find themselves… Maybe ill find me in the process.. I look at people and it hurts to c the truth behind the lie… I feel responsible even though its not me directly…. Lost
