Montreux, Switzerland Show

7/2/12 – Montreux, Switzerland

note to self: kale makes everything better. make sure it tastes good.

revelation: there was a moment tonight, during the performance of ‘you oughta know’, where my whole life journey, in all its’ phoenix-rising-suck-it-up-perseverance, made sense. the hair on my arms was standing up the whole time. i saw that the planet, culturally, has been moving from alpha women being burned at the stake and having their heads chopped off, many years ago, through my great grandmother’s and mother’s generation, where they had to sublimate their essential self for harmony reasons (aka: placating and a multitude of versions of self-betrayal), into my own….where even in 1995, patriarchy was rampant in the music industry and otherwise (i felt hate, in this context of patriarchy, being sent toward me for being who i WAS)… to where we are Now. where in my marriage and in culture in general, women are supported in being who they Are. alpha, beta, either. and that being clear about how empowered versions of beta and alpha Work. and how hierarchy can be re-defined as a context where everyone knows their roles, and that we can all work together toward the same end. and how one context to the next allows for the redefining of these roles. all this headiness to say that we have come SO FAR. and that there is beauty and harmony in these two orientations being played out—with awareness. that there is a light at the end of this gender war tunnel. and that in all the challenges that both genders have had to endure, there has been a gorgeous finish line…that we’ve been moving toward, and that can work really, really well. no without difficulty, as such, but at least without re-traumatization. and with healing. and with a great understanding of of what is possible, when both genders, both the alpha and the beta, work together. this was a quick flash. and a healing for me. with my having sung you oughta know so many times. with an ache in my heart. more on this down the road. just felt compelled to share.

favorite moment: hugging claude onstage here in montreux. he has given so much to so many artists, around the planet. and us artists are the true grateful to him. xo

  1. Good Day Alanis!
It’s Truly Wonderful that you had that revelation during a performance of, “You Oughta Know”! I have, for many years, sensed that you haven’t had closure concerning the meaning and feelings that you have had regarding that song, along with whatever happened regarding that song. Hopefully your healing regarding, “You Oughta Know”, will grow into a complete closure and Peace of Mind with that song and its cause……..
    Au Revoir………….

That’s a very deep thought by alanis. Excellent. I’m happy for her. I hope she writes a song about it. Though it is bitter sweet because of the schitzophentic threats that loom. Something needs to be done about it. PLEASE!!! Call the FBI. The threat has been made. She is married happily and mr. mental health needs to be on serious meds or put somewhere he can get help if it’s not too late.

    Lovely reflection!
Alanis, never for one minute underestimate your many solid, sturdy bricks and mortar you have layed to pave the road for women.

We had MTV the minute it came on in ’81 and I watched Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Sinead O’Connor all laying their bricks and mortar… and they too probably had no idea how profound the impact for women.
And then you in ’95 as many of us were coming into our own (I was 23) at that time… PROFOUND impact on how we thought, felt and the permission you gave.
Without even realizing it, you were breaking down at the micro level all of our internal barriers to feeling, expressing, identifying while meanwhile at the macro level telling the world to move on to a better way for men and women live in harmony.
Never underestimate the gift you gave and keep giving:)
On a very personal level, I am forever thankful for the emotional tapping that you have afforded me over the years and so happy to be going through Motherhood, working Motherhood, Attachment Parenting, Marriage at a similar time as you!
Happy Touring! Look forward to seeing you in Boston (which I hope will be a tour spot?!).
