Lighting candles to light the spirit
Think back on your knowledge of plotlines. (Through subconscious gleaning off of movies, books, music, theatrical productions, video games, the web, listening to others, etc.) everybody has a cache of stories that are literally at an instant’s recall. Apparently, there are only a finite amount of differing themes within in any story, and every new creation exhibits degrees of at least one of the 18 (or something?) plots that exist in space. This is a function of professional critics, that they may easier dissect a work of literature, but the principle is apropos. If one considers all of the stories that are in a person’s memories, he or she will never, ever, ever find a story that is as profound as the story of Jesus… with the notable exception of one.
Okay… so, there was this guy who wore a robe and sandals and didn’t shave and meandered through the dessert talking to people. And this dude with no more than a robe and sandals (that’s it!) did what no person, with technology and guns and tanks and armies, has ever been able to do or will do again: He absolutely influenced their minds and simultaneously set them on a path clearly toward freedom. If you can devise a storyline that is as profound as Jesus, you are guaranteed millions in book sales and a movie deal. You will be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams. Seriously. A glittering bank account if you can imagine any story even a portion as utterly mind-bending.
Maybe Alanis and SoulEye can do it. We shall see. (the end result must be the same, of course… set us in the direction of freedom and also influence us.)
Luv ya. Sorry ‘bout Chicago. No one is really ever there for you, are they? Fire everybody (trust me, they all deserve to go… your stage hands… all the unfriendly dudes who wear all black and act like automotons handling your possessions and secretly resent you and your passions) and be an acoustic diva for a moment. That is exactly what your fans want. Trending white people who are now lost in phones and sex and are consummate bores is a waste of your talents and time. Incidentally, what’s with all the damned white people? There was a Spanish festival at the Argon (sp?) less than a block away from the Riviera, they were bussing people in who were all out to enjoy life, and there was about as much integration among the populous as Nazi Germany. At the Riviera, there was in fact no dancing, no vibe, a troubling “we are ready to go” aura that permeated the entire building, and hum of conversation that waxed and waned while you were singing, and I hope for your sake as a professional that you beheaded whoever ran your soundboard. On the plus side, you made a fuck ton of money. Hope you like spending it in gas.
