ONE is an East Harlem woman who owns a bookstore. Another makes dried fruit in Gowanus. But these two old-school proprietors are using the most innovative modern tools to make a go of it.
And this week, Aurora Anaya-Cerda, owner of the La Casa Azul bookstore on E. 103rd St., and Noha Waibsnaider, who runs Peeled Snacks, were honored by none other than the White House for their entrepreneurial use of crowdfunding, a web-based solution to raising money from very small donors.
Crowdfunding, said Thomas Kalil of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, who emceed Tuesdayâs âChampions of Changeâ ceremony, âis the 21st Century equivalent of barn-raising.â

Anaya-Cerda established La Casa Azul online in 2008, focused on Latino-themed literature, but she struggled to open a brick-and-mortar location until she launched a drive on fundraising site Indiegogo.
She raised $40,000, which was matched by an anonymous backer.
And even though she lives by the internet, sheâll Michael Kors Crossbody Bag buck the old adage and not die by it.

âBookstores are still relevant in the internet age,â she told the Daily News, âbut we have to adapt. We need the continued support of the community. We feel that weâve become a Michael Kors Stores third place. A place where you would go to hang out.â
Waibsnaider, who lives in Park Michael Kors Tote Bags Slope, launched her dried fruit snack operation in 2004 and connected Michael Kors Fashion last year with new San Francisco-based crowdfunding site CircleUp. The firm raised roughly $2 million.
âIt was so great to have a whole new network of new investors who are excited about our mission to really bring about healthy snacks and really wanted to support us as we go through all of our growth,â said Waibsnaider, whose organic snacks are on shelves at Whole Foods, Starbucks and other Michael Kors Outlet Stores national chains.
âItâs not a sexy tech company, itâs real food,â she said. âItâs something that takes a long time to build and really requires putting a lot of time and effort into it. So itâs really wonderful to have a whole new source of funding.”
