One of my high school students was very upset because her girlfriend had dumped her and ’outed’ her at school. She started talking about how music always makes her feel better but that there wasn’t a song for her experience. I told her about Alanis’ song Not as We and how feeling alone in love and struggling to move forward when your identitity has been so tied to another human being is universal; a shared experience regardless of sexual orientation. She listened that night and returned the next day to say how much she loved the song and that she downloaded all of Alanis’ music. A small but significant example of how Alanis’ music connects and heals. Peace and love.
